  • This is why.

Thanks to being a member of FPN (fountain pen network), I recently came across something that I believe is worth sharing. I know that this may not be of an interest to everyone, but we as a society, globally, have started to loose one of the most important elements in life – hand writing. It is sad, but it is so true. And one that must be protected and advocated for many centuries in the future, despite our advances in technology. The content of this article is the very reason WHY I love the idea of pen on paper. It's part of human history and of our ancestor’s. And thus, it SHOULD be a part of us, now and for many years and generations to come.

  • These days, everyone's handwriting is shocking.

  • My penmanship is terrible - I blame it on taking notes in school. With my pens I do much better.

  • i love my hand writting :)

  • I'll take a nice Calibri font over my handwriting any day!

  • I don't do much long-writing by hand but I jot down a lot of notes and outlines for just about everything on legal pads, and keep a hand-written poetry book. I also religiously keep my handwritten flashcards, despite the fact that most of my friends seem to find it makes me 'quaint' when I do that.... I don't understand the despise that people hold for hand-written things anymore!

  • I agree with you the art of handwriting can be most joyful and delightful to read!

  • Mine never was good, and has gotten worse. I could be a doctor.

  • What you write today is very true. In fact one of my brother's teachers in grade 4 told my parents it's not a big deal if his hand writing isn't great because the future will all be computers, and this would have been around 1998 ! I remember after grade 3 hand writing was such an important part of school. And everyday we had to hand write our assignments...... normal writing was not allowed.

This continued until I started highschool in grade 8 and then I was super surprised to find out none of the teachers cared. So in highschool everyone would just write their assignments the normal standard way, or they would use computer. I have to admit I never hand write anything except my signature. I've never been super great at it, but that's what happens when you don't use it in over a dozen years.

I don't mind writing something, but I just never use hand writing, just the normal style of writing. It's always so much easier for me to read too. Some people hand write and I really struggle reading what they write. I definitely agree though computers can't replace these forms of writing, they should accompany them, but not replace them. It would be such a shame to lose them.

However the world is such a changing place and it will be very interesting to see what happens in the next 50 years. I am wondering how much longer printed newspapers will last ! You had a good idea about the food. I always think about doing that while I'm at restaurants, but I never seem to have my camera. I'll definitely try to take some pictures of some Mexican food though.

It's interesting that you wrote that I arrived in South America though ! As far as I know I'm a long ways from South America. The actual continent of South America doesn't actually start until after going through Panama and entering into Colombia. While there is the region of "Central America" I believe that is a region that is technically part of North America and consists of the countries just below Mexico all the way down to Panama.

However a lot of the people who live in those countries think of Central America as it's own continent I think. As for Mexico itself however, I am 100 % certain its in North America, especially as they are part of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) with Canada and the US. I do see Mexico as being kind of a gateway to the other countries in North America and the Latin world as it is a part of Latin America.

Anyways I hope that you've been having a great week. Take care and have a wonderful weekend, bye for now.

  • I agree that we are losing the art of handwriting.  Even for my Chinese class, I type, rather than write my homework. :)

  • I think that the thought process is different when hand writing, esp. when it comes to note taking.

  • @Got_Takoyaki - you got that right! :)

@Fatcat723 - my penmanship during school years actually better than now.  go figure.

@vsan79 - i know you do :) and i don't blame you.  your penmanship is better than mine and most people i know.

@CareyGLY - that's a nice font.  though a tad too small for my liking.  i tend to go with either Arial or Verdana.

@secade - it's a much forgotten practice/habit, which is sad.  but how on earth do people take notes anyways?  leave a voice note message on their phone?

@andreas_d - most certainly, andreas.  i'm glad you and i are on the same page.  and thanks for the recommendation :)

@Roadkill_Spatula - if handwriting is a prerequisite for becoming a doctor, i think MOST of us are eligible :)

@kyle061685 - a TEACHER said that?  what a moron!  as for mexico, i had forgotten there is such thing as CENTRAL america.  i have always thought there are only north and south.  please excuse my ignorance.  guess you learn new things every day and i have to thank you for that.

@brooklyn2028 - you TYPE chinese?  i thought part of chinese lesson is to learn how to WRITE strokes and to know which strokes go first, no?

@beowulf222 - that's true.  my 'note-taking' skill produces a very chicken-scratch result of writing.  but yours seemed a very nice one.  or was that NOT your regular note-taking writing skill?

  • @rudyhou - I wasn't note taking but scribbling. Two different things. LOL When I take notes fast, I often cannot read them after taking them.

  • @rudyhou - I do write the characters to learn the stroke order but I also need to create sentences so instead of writing by pen and paper, I type them. :)

  • there will be no problem for me to hand write in English....however I start to forget how to write in  Traditional Chinese........

  • Well, there is a reason why I continue to hand-write letters and postcards to friends and family...

  • @beowulf222 - same in my case, nick.

@brooklyn2028 - i never use a keyboard that uses chinese characters, so i can't imagine how is easy/difficult that would be.

@agmhkg - i have not a clue when it comes to chinese, writen or verbal.

@christao408 - who drew the map of places to eat at jathujak market for me?  you or tawn?  i forgot.

  • @rudyhou - Could not possibly have been Tawn.

  • @christao408 - well, i remembered he drew me the map of thailand as we were discussing on regional flavors and how different parts of thailand have a different approach to flavors because of the influence from their nearby country neighbor.  but then there is a map drawn on where i could find good food at jathujak market and it has a different hand writing style and so i can only assume it was you, though i can't remember who drew the map.
